Another well-written, quick, fairly entertaining C.S. Harris novel. The actual mystery ultimately felt like a tree with few branches but tons of tinsel, and the ever-growing layers of backstory and multitude of possible culprits meant none were fully-developed, or especially convincing. Neither Sebastian nor wife Hero was essential to this story, and this plotline was not personally meaningful to them; really, any protagonist would have sufficedMuch as in book 15, the over-arching storylines of the St. Cyr series did not move forward even an inch, and indeed, merited only passing reference - as if to assure us we’ll get back to the real story ...eventually. Frankly, the recent books feel like irrelevant side-trips or placeholders to me, and the series is becoming less engaging as it’s begun to lose focus and momentum.
