"Over the past six centuries, quarantine has shaped the public health response to infectious disease around the world—but it has also shaped our streets, buildings, and cities, our borders, laws, identities, and imaginations."The authors do an excellent job assessing the concept of quarantine across multiple dimensions - time, space, nature, built environments, mythology and war to name a few.And the book takes an interesting form - together, we go on a journey of discovery, our intrepid authors leading the way, ducking through ruins, walking through the halls of NASA, and everything in between - which is a nice approach - we see our authors trying on the quarantine garb of old (that plague doctor beak thing) and of new (clean rooms). The 'tangibility' of quarantine comes through. What we were vaguely interested in takes on depth.I came away smarter from reading this book, with more fun snippets to tell at parties ("One in ten of America’s cows reside within a two-hundred-mile radius of Manhattan, Kansas"), more words to use that I did not know ("Items that can harbor and transmit contagion are called fomites"), a palpable sense of food insecurity; and more informed about how quarantine was instrumental in and obstructive to globalization.What else can you ask for?
