George Washington Carver (1864-1943) is best known for developing new uses for agricultural crops and teaching methods of soil improvement to southern farmers. This annotated selection of his letters and other writings from the collections at the Tuskegee Institute and the George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, Missouri, reveals the forces that shaped his creative genius—including the influence of persistent racism. His letters also show us Carver’s deep love for his fellow man, whether manifested in his efforts to treat polio victims in the 1930s or in his emotionally charged friendships that lasted a lifetime. With a new chapter on the oral history interviews Dr. Kremer conducted (several years after publication of the first edition) with people who knew Carver personally, and the addition of newly uncovered documents and a bank of impressive photographs of Carver and some of his friends, this second edition of our classic title commemorates the 75th anniversary of Carver’s death on January 5, 2018.

At this time of writing, The Mobi George Washington Carver: In His Own Words, Second Edition has garnered 10 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Mobi is Good TO READ!

“Rarely was he (Carver) content to allow his accomplishments to stand on their own merit, rather, he insisted on measuring them against a whole chain of adverse circumstances he had had to fight against. He seemed to want to say, to no one in particular, or rather to anyone who would listen, ‘You are right to be impressed with what I have accomplished, but if you only knew the odds against which I struggled, you would be astounded.’ ”This comment sets the tone for this whole misnamed book. Beginning his days at 4:00 a.m., George Washington Carver took to the woods, pouring himself out before the Lord through the whole of his life, and was specifically guided into discoveries that would completely revolutionize the South and ultimately uplift a whole nation, while this author shamelessly busies himself with examining Carver’s self-image, highlighting minor discrepancies in Carver’s life sketches, making an unconvincing argument of Carver as a complex figure, and pronouncing him “immodest”. The “In His Own Words” part of the title is bodaciously inaccurate as the author takes every opportunity to denigrate the character of Mr. Carver and diminish his multitudinous accomplishments in a sea of opinion. However, no biographer, however scholarly, erudite, or enlightened, will ever convincingly besmirch the name of one of God’s greatest servants to mankind.Just for the record, for whatever it’s worth, I am white, grew up in the South, am 78 years old, and have several degrees and accomplishments. I have read many books about Mr. Carver, the best of which I believe is the 60-page booklet, "The Man Who Talks With the Flowers". It was written by a man who knew him personally and was, “one of his boys”. It provides more insight into the nature of spirituality than the vast majority of so-called “spiritual books” (at least the ones that I have ever read), because here was a man who regularly talked with God and God talked with him, every day of his life! Was Carver humble and incomplex, like Moses, who talked face to face with God as a friend, or was he complex and immodest? The proof is in the pudding. You decide.(Note: the biography by Lawrence Elliot is the best I’ve read so far.)
