How do I describe this... It's a love story. It's a coming of age story. It's a ghost story. Don't forget the dysfunctional and unforgettable family story. All of that. All rolled together beautifully. So beautifully! I read it twice just to make sure I didn't miss anything, and I loved it all the more in the second reading.I think Garth Stein is one of those writers whose stories--you'd think--would make a block buster of a movie. But his story telling is so intimate, the visuals of blue toe nails, lovers' looks, the smells of pine sap and camp fires... No, it's not something that someone else should interpret for you for the big screen--it needs to be read, you need to feel the story in your hands, and laugh, and cry, and smile at the words on the page.
